Milton Glaser is one of the foremost graphic designers of our time. He is still working into his 70's, maintains a studio and enjoys teaching. I came across a recent video profile of Glaser from Adobe titled Art is Work . Glaser talks about the role of art in the world and his work in the design field. I found it very inspirational and shared it with my students at Ithaca College. I encourage you to give it a look.
I also came across a funny reference to Glaser in Seth Godin's blog. Seth reports that Glaser threw him out of a design class several years ago. It's a humorous little tale, so give it a read.
Seth also points readers to a presentation given by Glaser titled 10 Things I Have Learned . I have several favorites among these pearls of wisdom including:
- Work only for people you like ( I could have saved myself several unhappy years if I'd followed this one)
- Avoid toxic people (check out his test for identifying toxic people)
- If you have a choice, never have a job (nice anecdote about John Cage)
I haven't reached the elder statesman stage yet, but this has inspired me to think about the 10 big things that I've learned so far. How about you?
