GM's Virtual Design Studio

Despite its lack of success in the marketplace, GM has been pretty innovative when it comes to using social media. Several years ago, they initiated the FastLane blog. This allowed their senior managers to connect directly with consumers and is one of the most successful corporate blogs in my opinion. The postings are honest and the number of comments they garner is impressive.

CNET is now reporting on GM's new program, creating a virtual design studio online. The idea here is to post future vehicle design concepts and get customer feedback. It's a combination research project and social-networking site. The CNET story also includes the introductory video that GM produced and posted where else but on YouTube.

I don't know if GM will survive in the long run but I admire their innovative use of social media to connect with consumers.

Radio Shack Rebranding

In an attempt to freshen its image and more accurately reflect its business, Radio Shack is dropping the "Radio" from its name and will now be known as "The Shack." I can understand the logic behind this since the company probably sells just about everything except radios these days. They offer a wide variety of consumer electronics and accessories including cellphones, iPod accessories, computers and GPS units. 

Still, you can't underestimate the equity associated with its current name. This has been built up over many years and will be both expensive and risky to change. Name recognition, especially in the homogenized atmosphere of shopping malls, is an important consideration.
